Watch out for brms updates on these issues. There may come a time when these models will be feasible within brms.
Section 4.6, fit b4.8: The current mgcv syntax for b-splines is a mess. This may be a personal limitation. Regardless, keep an eye out for syntax changes and for work by Gavin Simpson on the topic.
Section 14.4, fit m14.7: Social relations models (SRM) are not currently possible because brms does not allow covariances among distinct random effects with the same levels (see issue #502)
