Summary

We discussed a lot of different ideas for adding location filtering to search in this workshop.

One promising idea is to add a basic "domestic" vs. "international" filter based on the grantor agency. We could infer this manually by saying e.g. "USAID is probably international". Is there some way to automate this?

Notes from Friday 1/24 brainstorm

  • NIH uses codes to "tag" grants (https://grants.nih.gov/funding/activity-codes)
  • Discovery into some amount (25?) of recent opportunities. What can we get from those 25?
  • Manual tagging based on agency might be the right first try at this
  • We can experiment behind feature flags, not committed to shipping anything
  • Department of State is mostly international https://simpler.grants.gov/search?agency=DOS-JPN
  • Do we want to do this in the quickest/dirtiest way possible (filter on top of the agency filter), or use it to test out a bigger systems change (e.g. tags)?
  • Do we just turn this kind of feature on for a % of users? Or do we allow users to opt in?
