Release v2.4 crashes when /dev/i2c-* are not accessible for the user

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:
$ sudo modprobe i2c-dev
$ ls -l /dev/i2c-7
crw-rw---- 1 root i2c 89, 7 20. Jan 11:15 /dev/i2c-7
$ # user is not member in group i2c
$ brightness-controller

Either an error message or just grayed out option to use ddc
