On a call today @dberlow mentioned that Grade could be used to focus attention on a word or phase (like a highlighter marker).
Practical examples of this can be to replace the 'bouncing ball' or hue used in Karaoke subtitles to indicate current syllable position. Closed Caption subtitles typically do not have such indications, but Grade could be subtle enough that it would work well there too.
This could also be used in childhhood education software/videos to focus attention on a current word or grapheme during motion graphics of reading.
For a UI, it could be used negatively to indicate a hover state and positively to indicate an active state.
