I'd like to be able to see most recent comments first, or last, rather than mixed throughout.

Interesting feature request. You can't even do it on the main website. I'll see if it is feasible on HacKit.

I noticed that the feature of the site is to bump the comments with the newest replies to the top.

This helps but is still not easy to read, because the first comment might have 50 replies which means the recent comment is at some unknown distance from the top of the page.
