This would have been huge for me personally. It took me a few days to realize that creating the imagedefinitions.json artifact was required to actually get deployment to work.

that is needed by codepipeline and in our codepipeline readme :
https://github.com/cloudposse/terraform-aws-ecs-codepipeline#example-buildspec
it explains that is needed.
