Various issues with enable/disable

These may or may not still happen, but here are the old reports:

  Enabling while already editing fails to show status bar.  Disabling fails
to get rid of it until a keystroke is received in the textarea.

  BUG: When reactivating jV when it's been turned off in a window, we both
  handle and let through the first char.

  BUG: When toggling jV on and off, there seems to be some issue or lag with
  getting rid of the status bar.
