GPIO input voltage (3.6v) compatible with Wiegand (5V)

Isn't there a problem connecting the Wiegand bus directly to the GPIO of the ESP-12E?

• The specifications of the ESP-12E indicate Vih max 3.6V. (pg 15 :https://nurdspace.nl/images/e/e0/ESP8266_Specifications_English.pdf)
• The specifications of Wiegand indicates "high" voltage level — usually +5 VDC (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiegand_interface).
  Wouldn't it be appropriate to place a "Logic Level Converter" between the two?
