<h1>Professional Background</h1>
<p>
I am a scientist dedicated to applying genome sequencing technologies to enhance our understanding of health and diseases globally. My work focuses on addressing key challenges such as pathogen characterization, outbreak investigation, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance. By leveraging advancements in data science, genomics, and bioinformatics, I aim to generate insights that inform and transform health outcomes worldwide. I am also supporting Genomics, Bioinformatics, and Data Science programs at <a href="https://chs.mak.ac.ug/team/gerald-mboowa" target="_blank">Makerere University</a>.
</p>
<h2>Funded Research Projects</h2>
<p>
As an investigator, I have contributed to various research projects, including:
</p>
<ul>
<li>
Understanding transmission dynamics and acquisition of antimicrobial resistance in East Africa at referral hospitals and community settings
(<a href="https://bit.ly/3D5E1OU" target="_blank">details</a>).
</li>
<li>
Piloting the use of rapid RT-qPCR assays for surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern in Africa
(<a href="https://gates.ly/3vOmOsY" target="_blank">details</a>).
</li>
<li>
Genomic surveillance of <i>Vibrio cholerae</i>, <i>Escherichia coli</i>, and <i>Klebsiella pneumoniae</i> in Africa
(<a href="https://bit.ly/3ZzVJWX" target="_blank">details</a>).
</li>
<li>
The European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) project focused on pathogen detection in HIV-infected children with non-malarial febrile illnesses using metagenomic sequencing
(<a href="https://www.edctp.org/projects-2/edctp2-projects/career-development-fellowships-in-poverty-related-diseases-and-child-and-adolescent-health-2020/" target="_blank">details</a>).

</ul>
<h2>Recent Research Focus: Machine Learning in AMR Prediction</h2>
<p>
Our team is currently applying machine learning techniques to predict antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacterial pathogens. Recent studies include:
</p>
<ul>
<li>
<i>Escherichia coli</i>: Using genomic data to predict resistance phenotypes and identify novel resistance determinants
(<a href="https://bmcgenomics.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12864-024-10214-4" target="_blank">full study</a>).
</li>
<li>
<i>Mycobacterium tuberculosis</i>: Leveraging machine learning to enhance resistance prediction and support TB control efforts
(<a href="https://bmcinfectdis.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12879-024-10282-7" target="_blank">full study</a>).
</li>
</ul>
<h2>Professional Contributions</h2>
<p>
Over the past 15 years, I have effectively combined roles in research and teaching. In collaboration with colleagues at Makerere University, I played a key role in establishing Fogarty/NIH-funded bioinformatics graduate training programs aimed at building genomics and research capacity across Africa. Additionally, I have organized numerous training programs to further support these efforts such as;
<ul>
<li><a href="https://bit.ly/3igJ9VI" target="_blank">UC Berkeley’s Center for Emerging and Neglected Diseases</a></li>
<li><a href="https://bit.ly/33dTyNI" target="_blank">H3ABioNet</a></li>
<li><a href="https://bit.ly/3i9OI8B" target="_blank">Wellcome Advanced Courses</a></li>
<li><a href="https://youtu.be/YpQFh_ZtA4E" target="_blank">Africa CDC</a></li>
</ul>
<h2>Bioinformatics Tools</h2>
<p>
My team developed two bioinformatics tools:
</p>
<ul>
<li>
<b>rMAP:</b> A rapid microbial analysis and profiling pipeline
(<a href="https://bit.ly/36g809L" target="_blank">tool features</a>,
<a href="https://www.microbiologyresearch.org/content/journal/mgen/10.1099/mgen.0.000583" target="_blank">publication</a>).
</li>
<li>
<b>HIVDRIVES:</b> For HIV drug resistance profiling
(<a href="https://www.microbiologyresearch.org/content/journal/acmi/10.1099/acmi.0.000815.v3" target="_blank">details</a>).
</li>
</ul>
<h2>Scholarly Achievement and Awards</h2>
<p>
I have authored over 135 publications
(<a href="https://bit.ly/3LrA2kC" target="_blank">view publications</a>) and received the Young Investigators Award from the African Association for Research and Control of AMR
(<a href="https://bit.ly/3SAbd9G" target="_blank">award details</a>).
</p>
<h2>Roles</h2>
<p>
Since 2019, I have contributed in the capacity of a bioinformatics scientist at the
<a href="https://ace.ac.ug/about/staff/" target="_blank">African Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data-Intensive Sciences</a>, and the Africa CDC’s Pathogen Genomics Program
(<a href="https://africacdc.org/people/gerald-mboowa/" target="_blank">profile</a>,
<a href="https://nextstrain.org/groups/africa-cdc/" target="_blank">data visualization</a>).
