Setup for Liquid-style category page

Hi! I'm trying to use the "Liquid-only" (i.e., one big page with hash links) approach for archives on my MM blog because it's hosted on GitHub Pages. In my _config.yml, I have

category_archive:
  type: liquid
  path: /categories/

and in _pages I have a file called category-archive.md containing

title: "Posts by category"
layout: categories
permalink: /categories/
author_profile: true
---

The category links are showing up on my posts, but they're broken links. What am I doing wrong?

I figured out the issue: the file I had in _pages/category-archive.md should have been in categories/index.md.

In the documentation at https://mmistakes.github.io/minimal-mistakes/docs/configuration/#archive-settings, this wording confused me:

Note: these are simply hash (fragment) links into the full taxonomy index pages. For them to resolve properly, the category and tag index pages need to exist at /categories/index.html (copy to _pages/category-archive.md) and /tags/index.html (copy to _pages/tag-archive.md).

I thought "copy to _pages/category_archive.md" meant "copy the contents of this file to a file called _pages/category_archive.md in your own project".
