Describe your issue
I'm trying to connect an ecosteno (nolltronics) to my Ubuntu (22.04) laptop.
I connected via usb c cable and can see it detected in 'dmesg' output.
When I switch plover machine to Gemini, I'm getting a warning that no serial port was found.
I added my user to the dialout group and restarted my laptop, but I'm still getting the same message.
What else should I be doing?

That warning sounds like you haven't selected a serial port yet. You should be able to go into configuration → machine, and then open the ports list and select the Ecosteno.

This page should help you if you get stuck: https://plover.wiki/index.php/Setting_up_a_hobbyist_writer_with_Plover

And if all else fails, it might be easier to join the Plover Discord server and we can help you troubleshoot there.

Did you try a different physical port?
I noticed my steno keyboard online works from one usb and not the other.

Can also confirm this happens on windows 11 with [email protected] and an [email protected].

I get a OS notification from python with the following text:

plover
WARNING: Serial port is not open: None

The device is visible in Windows' device manager on port COM5 or COM6 (depending on which USB port it's plugged into), and the device is found by (and correctly identified by) the Configuration > Machine > Port > Scan utility, but it never connects, and pressing the refresh icon in the main plover Machine interface results in the python notification above. The device also works as a keyboard, and is in its serial steno mode (emulating a Gemini PR).

[email protected] reliably finds the ecosteno on either COM / USB port. It did produce the same python error (WARNING: Serial port is not open: None) on the very first run, but does not produce the error on subsequent connections.

After the first successful serial connection using [email protected], starting [email protected] now connects reliably - which suggests to me that [email protected] does some initialization or driver setup work that [email protected] does not.
