So, we have a race mode, which you can try to beat your own record, or if you do a race match online, beat your friend's records, watch them, give advice and so on.
But what if we could expand it to be a bit more feature complete?
What i mean by that, is, what if we had different medals you could earn by beating a certain time which was set by the map designer?
This could encourage people to try to get better even more than they already do, as that's the nature of races, regardless of which game and genre it is.
In turn, people can familiarize themselves better with all the mechanics.
What i'm thinking for medals is:
Bronze, Silver, Gold, the usual stuff.
Platinum, which takes more practice
Eclipse medal, which is a extremely tight timing required to beat.
As for the challenge levels, they can be kept as it is, not too overly long (at least at the beginning), and and with the added medal system, or even feature weapons and enemies, which i'll talk about below:
What about the weapon trials?
We have 11 weapons, and each has it's own strengths and weaknesses, so it wouldn't be too difficult to design challenge levels specific for them, they wouldn't even need to be long if anything.
For this to happen, we need some sort of target to shoot though, which can be a simple hovering sphere that has only one HP (i can make the model easily without issues).
Maps in the weapon trials could make the use of "Kill all targets to open the exit" as a mechanic, along with the medals for showing how efficient you are at handling them.
What is the reward for beating all the trials, getting all Platinum Medals (Eclipse medals wouldn't be necessary, just bragging rights)?
Maybe a specific vanity could be unlocked by managing to get all of them, or a pattern.
Well, i'm working on a demo map featuring the rollers as static enemies to demonstrate how this could work, and here is the prototype, for now:

Note how the end door doesn't open until i hit all of them, it's because i made it so all the rollers spawn on a trigger which is always ON, and when they don't interact with it, the door opens.
Challenge maps/Weapon trials are more specifically for single player since they would work better there, might have to think about a multi-player version.
I'll update the post later with more tests and ideas.
