ive tried connecting it to my beatstep for midi clock but nothing seems to work!

Unfortunately I think that the JUCE application wrapper that we use for the standalone mode doesn't support external start/stop/clock (or at least the default configuration doesn't).
This will need to be looked at in the code.

I was going to create a new issue but I have the same problem as the OP. But I found I needed to have an active audio connection then Stochas would play.

Considering Stochas is a midi only application could the reliance on any audio connection be killed?

But what I also find puzzling is that all the connections on Stochas - according to pipewire - are audio. There's no mention of midi even when I'm successfully driving an VCO in VCVRack.
