I tested this on a ATmega169PA salvaged from an old thermostat and made it blink an LED. So it assembles code that runs.
I accidentally put the brakes on further experimentation by burning out a relay driver which now shorts VCC to ground. Maybe someone else who has access to one of these chips or a suitable emulator can put it through the ropes.
