Challenge Week14 Data Analysis BootCamp using Tableau and Pandas.
Citi Bike, the biggest bike sharing program in the US, has a lot of data to look for, especially for this project, data from August 2019 was examined and analyzed using Tableau so Des Moines can take better investment decisions based on this data. Several graphs were done, and they show information about the length of time that bikes are checked out by gender, number of bike trips for each hour of each day of the week etc.

In the first graph, we can see that 5 minutes is the most frequent average time that riders use the bike with a total of 146, 752 rides. The results show that males use more CitiBike and the majority of their trips last 5 min, females follow the same trend, unknow gender users tend to use the bikes 16-17 min.
Thursday at 8 am, 5 pm and 6 pm are the most popular hours for users to ride a bike. Weekdays have more traffic in the mornings and the evenings than weekends where 12 pm is the most popular hour. Male and Female tend to have the same behavior. Unknow gender users have more activity on weekends compared to weekdays.
Male subscribers make the most rides especially on Thursday and Friday, female subscribers behave the same, costumers tend to use the bikes on Saturday and Sunday. 5 pm is the most popular hour for the subscribers and 6pm and 8 am. Customers peak hours are 5 pm, 4pm and 3 pm.
Most of the rides take place in Manhattan. They have a high demand in neighborhoods like Murray Hill, Union Square, Tribeca, and Hudson Yards. Out of Manhattan, we can see movement in Williamsburg and Dumbo.
The top stations for the subscribers are Pershing Square in Midtown Manhattan and E17 St & Broadway which is in Union Square. For the costumers, the top stations are Central Park & 6th Ave and Grand Army Plaza & Central Park.
Approximately 1/3 of the bikes have high use and the rest low. This can indicate that they will soon need to be replace or fixed.
Citibike is mostly used by subscribers that need the bike to go to work, we can see it clearly in the traffic on weekdays and the busy neighborhoods. There is also a significant number of tourists that use the bike mostly on weekends, probably are the ones who didn’t specify the gender and tend to use the bikes for 16 min in comparison to 5 min of the subscribers. The bikes are mostly used by male subscribers who have rides 5 min long. Citibike has a great opportunity for a marketing campaign to impulse females to use bikes more often. Having a bike repair/replacement plan is a must especially for the bikes used in the most popular neighborhoods like Union Square and Hudson Yards. Since rides tend to be very short, it would be a good idea to have analyze the possibility of having more stations. The 2 additional visualizations suggested for future analysis would be:
- Compare data for different months not just August to see if trends remain the same.
- Analyze where are located the high use bikes to take an action plan for the replacement.
