nit: AFAIK, build-system <noun>
(here and below) is correct: "build" is modifying "system", not "file", and prefix compound adjectives use dashes to disambiguate.

I'm not an authority on the field of word hyphenation in English, I'm willing to learn something. :)
I don't think the link you provided applies to this situation — I think your links talks about adjectives, but "build system" is not an adjective. Hmm, but then again, the link also refers to a "nine page" in a "nine-page report" as an adjective which I also wouldn't consider an adjective… Seems like you call anything that modifies a word an "adjective" in English? oO I'll fix this line.
